We don't like for things to get boring around here so we like to try and stay on our toes and Gavin helps us do that in more ways than one! However, the major way that he has done that for me is trying to keep him as injury free as possible. It hasn't gone great. So far we have been to the emergency room three times in his three short years. I blogged about the first time here, the second time he broke his collar bone and once again, there was much discussion between me and different doctors about whether it was actually broken, lots of second guessing myself if I was doing the right thing or over-reacting, etc. There was none of that this time! I knew the minute I looked at him that he was going to need stitches and there was only one place to get that done.
It went a little something like this......hey mom can we go swimming? Sure Gav, let's get our swim suits on. Here, I'll put yours on first....ok now let me put mine on. Here I will just throw my pants on the couch (they land on both loveseat and ottoman) and I turn around to grab my swimsuit bottoms. Gavin continues to be his normal self jumping around the living room like a wild man.......slap.....scream!!!! I turn around to see Gavin laying belly down on the tile floor in between the loveseat and ottoman. Go over and pick him up to see blood running down this throat and chest and his chin split and all I can see is a deep wound. Ok, try not to panic, grab a wet paper towel and attempt to clean him off, set him on the couch and try to help him calm down. I got him clean and thankfully he wasn't gushing blood so I could get a bigger, clean towel that he could hold on his chin while I put my clothes back on. Call Joshua and say I guess I'm taking Gavin to the ER, want to meet us there? Get in the car and drive as fast as I can to the ER, secretly hoping a cop would stop us so that when he says is there an emergency ma'am? I can say YES!!!! Anyway, get to the ER and get seen immediately and Joshua shows up soon go back to the room and the doctor comes in....yep, he'll need stitches. Thankfully there's no doubt here and I don't find myself trying to convince him there is more wrong with Gavin than what he can see. So the nurse comes in and starts the numbing process and now all we have to do is wait for the medicine to work so they can sew his chin shut. By this time in the process Gavin was throughly enjoying himself. Case and point:
He doesn't even look like he belongs in the hospital, much less the ER. Just sittin back enjoying some cartoons. Takin it easy. Crack Me Up!
They get him all numbed up and wrap him up in a sheet like a burrito and he holds really still and let them sew him up without a whimper. That was a huge relief. I was worried how all this was going to go down but he was a champ and they were done within a couple minutes. We were checked in, sewn up and checked out within two hours! Not bad for the ER! But this is what we ended up with:
So Gavin has joined the chin stitches group. Both Joshua and I have the same scar so we figured it was only appropriate that Gavin have one too! I guess I better start saving up the ER copay for when the next one needs to go get his chin sewn back together!
